You can do this on your own or with a family member on the same paper (collaborative art!) or separately. Have fun!
All you need for this exercise is a piece of paper, a pencil, maybe some markers, and some shapes to trace! We've specifically practiced this kind of design-making in 1st grade, however, anyone can try this! You can do this on your own or with a family member on the same paper (collaborative art!) or separately. Have fun!

Before we begin, take a look at this fun and colorful painting by American artist and designer Laurel Burch. These whimsical cats are going to inspire us today! Maybe you could also spend some time reading your favorite book about a cat? My daughter Matilda and I like to read "Kitten's First Full Moon" by Kevin Henkes. You can find other famous artwork featuring cats such as these by German artist Franz Marc: March is YAM!! All students and families are invited to take a walk downtown Ann Arbor and check out the beautiful student artwork featured in the windows of local businesses (see attached pdf for details). Artwork by selected Bryant and Pattengill (my classes only) students will be exhibited at Real Seafood Co. Please check out mainstreetannarbor.org for special events and workshops!!!
3rd Grade students in Mrs. Moizio's and Mr. Frankel's class learned about contemporary Aboriginal Art. We discussed the rich history of Aboriginal painting dating back to 40,000 B.C. and also the people's deep connection to natural things. Many of these artworks are based on their belief of Dreaming/ Dream Time (how life came to be). There are many symbols and stories associated with this belief which artists express in their works. Out of respect for their beliefs, we did not talk about how to express these symbols but rather focused on layering shapes and lines and the process of dot painting. |
